Big enough to have legal problems. Not yet big enough for a legal department.
Retained serves companies from roughly $2M to $100M+ in revenue. At that size, a business has real legal surface area: contracts worth fighting over, employees worth protecting against, regulators who know its name. What it usually does not have is anyone inside the walls whose job is the law.
Retained fits
Founder-led and family-held companies, where the owner has been the de facto general counsel for years and would like to stop.
Multi-entity groups, where risk hides in the seams between companies. Each operating entity is priced on its own revenue, with affiliate consideration across the group.
Companies in growth, where every new customer, hire, and state adds legal surface faster than anyone is watching it.
Companies preparing for an eventual sale, where the difference between a clean diligence process and a painful one is decided years before the LOI.
What Retained is not for
Companies wanting a one-off document. A single contract has a hundred capable authors; a department is a different purchase.
Litigation-only engagements. Retained builds and runs legal departments. Matters are handled when they arise for members, not sold at the door.
Companies shopping for the cheapest possible answer. Retained is priced to be predictable, not to be minimal. The cheapest answer is available elsewhere and usually costs the most.
