Who Retained is for.
Retained serves companies from roughly $2M to $100M+ in revenue. Companies that size carry real legal weight: contracts, employees, lenders, landlords, regulators, and often several entities. Many could justify in-house counsel and some have considered it. What they usually share is that legal work arrives from a dozen directions and gets handled piecemeal, by different firms, at different rates, with nobody holding the whole picture. Retained is for companies that want that work owned in one place, without recruiting, housing, and managing a department themselves.
Four situations we see most.
Founder-led and family-held companies, where the owner has been carrying the legal function alongside everything else and would rather hand it to someone accountable for it.
Multi-entity groups, where risk tends to live in the seams between companies: intercompany agreements that were never written, guaranties nobody tracked, records that drifted apart. Each operating entity is priced on its own revenue, with affiliate consideration across the group.
Companies in growth, where every new customer, hire, and state adds legal surface faster than anyone inside has time to watch it.
Companies preparing for an eventual sale, where the condition of the contracts, records, and compliance file will be examined closely by a buyer, and where the difference between a smooth diligence process and a painful one is decided years before the LOI.
An honest boundary.
A company that needs one document reviewed has many good options, and a membership is not the right purchase for that.
A company looking only for litigation defense is better served by engaging litigation counsel directly. Retained handles matters for members; it does not sell litigation as a standalone service.
And a company selecting purely on the lowest price will find lower numbers elsewhere. Retained is priced to be predictable and to fund actual attention to the business, not to win on cost alone.
